[Crucial RAM] helps me get the highest performance out of my laptop. Whenever I’m setting up a brand-new computer or a gently used one, I rely on Crucial for maxing out the RAM and upgrading the hard drive.

When putting together [a] new PC, I decided to splurge on a high-end SSD to take advantage of its PCIe 5.0 support. Although the PC is used mostly for gaming, I also do video/photo editing. This SSD is both huge and fast.

Gaming FAQs

Explore answers to your top questions about gaming memory and SSDs to boost your gaming setup

  • What does RAM do for gaming performance?

RAM (Random Access Memory) is crucial for gaming as it stores the data that your CPU needs to access quickly. More RAM allows for better multitasking and smoother gameplay, especially in modern games that require more memory. Insufficient RAM can lead to lag and slower performance.

When you open a game, for example, the game’s assets, such as textures, models and sounds, are loaded into RAM to allow for quick access and smooth gameplay. Similarly, when you switch between applications, the data in RAM helps ensure that the transition is fast and seamless. Once you shut down or restart your computer, the data in RAM is cleared, as it is a volatile form of memory.

  • What are the benefits of SSDs for gaming?

Upgrading to an SSD for gaming offers several benefits, including significantly faster load times, quicker boot-ups and improved overall system responsiveness. SSDs also have no moving parts, making them more durable and less prone to mechanical failure compared to HDDs. This upgrade can enhance your gaming experience by reducing wait times and providing smoother gameplay.

For more information, visit our article on How NVMe SSDs Improve Gaming.

  • How much RAM do I need for modern gaming?

For modern gaming, 16GB of RAM is generally recommended. This amount ensures that you can run the latest games smoothly and handle other background tasks without performance issues. Some high-end games and applications may benefit from 32GB, but 16GB is sufficient for most gamers. Check your game requirements to see how much RAM is needed.

For more information, visit our article on How Much RAM Do I Need for Gaming?

  • How do read and write speeds impact gaming performance?

Read and write speeds determine how quickly data can be accessed and saved on your storage device. Higher speeds mean faster game load times, quicker file transfers and better overall performance. SSDs typically offer much higher read and write speeds compared to HDDs, making them ideal for gaming.

For more information, visit our article on What to Know About Common SSD Specifications.

  • How do I know if RAM or SSD is compatible with my motherboard?

To check if your motherboard supports a specific type of RAM or SSD, you need to look at the motherboard's specifications. For SSDs, check for available slots (like M.2 or SATA) and ensure compatibility with the SSD's interface. Most modern motherboards support a variety of SSDs, but it's always good to double-check. You can also use tools like the Crucial System Scanner and Upgrade Selector to easily determine compatibility and find the right RAM or SSD for your system.

For more information, visit our article on Motherboard and RAM Compatibility.

  • How much storage do I need for my game library?

The amount of storage you need depends on the size of your game library. Modern games can be quite large, often exceeding 50GB each. Given that the average triple-A game requires around 80-100GB of storage, you could fit approximately 10 to 12 of these games on a 1TB SSD. This estimate accounts for the typical size range of modern games, but keep in mind that some games might be larger, especially with updates and additional content. A 1TB SSD is a good starting point for most gamers, providing ample space for several games, applications and files. If you have a large library, consider a 2TB or larger SSD.

  • What are the benefits of SSDs for gaming?

The Crucial T500 is one of the best SSDs for the PlayStation®5. It offers excellent performance making it a great choice for expanding your console's storage. The PlayStation 5 comes with an 825GB SSD, but only 667.2GB of that is usable for games and apps due to system files. The Crucial T500 SSD, on the other hand, offers up to 4TB of storage for around 45 AAA games.

  1. Typical I/O performance as measured using CrystalDiskMark® with a queue depth of 512 and write cache enabled. Windows 11 Core isolation disabled for performance measurement. Fresh out-of-box (FOB) state is assumed. For performance measurement purposes, the SSD may be restored to FOB state using the secure erase command. System variations will affect measured results.
  2. Some storage capacity is used for formatting and other purposes and is not available for data storage. 1GB equals 1 billion bytes.
  3. Non-heatsink versions must be installed with a motherboard or alternate heatsink to achieve optimal performance.
  4. Crucial DDR5 desktop memory modules (UDIMMs) can reach rated speeds with Intel XMP 3.0 or most AMD EXPOTM turned on in the UEFI/BIOS settings. Applicable for all Crucial DDR5 desktop memory (UDIMM) modules except Crucial DDR5-4800 desktop memory, which supports only Intel® XMP 3.0. Based on published competitor specs for DDR5 memory as of August 2023.
  5. Comparing the true memory latency of Crucial Pro DRAM: OC Gaming Edition of 12ns for 6,400MT/s CL40 to the true memory latency of Crucial Pro DRAM Plug-and-Play edition of 16ns for 6,000MT/s CL48. 12ns is 25% lower than 16ns of true memory latency.
  6. Densities are defined by JEDEC for the life of the DDR5 generation of memory.
  7. MB/s speed measured as maximum sequential performance of device as measured by Crucial on a high-performance desktop computer with Crystal Disk Mark (version 8.0.1 for x64). Your performance may vary.
  8. Compatibility may vary and may be contingent on device formatting and host capabilities. Compatible Android devices must be able to work with USB Mass Storage over OTG. Operating system updates and reformatting may be required.
